Securing America’s Future

Mission Critical Materials is a next-generation materials company transforming contaminated water into a US domestic supply chain of mission critical resources for national security and advanced manufacturing.

MISSION

Our mission is to accelerate the country’s access to a domestic supply chain of rare earth materials. Because they aren’t just strategic–they’re mission critical.

The United States depends on a fragile global supply chain for rare earth elements and critical minerals—materials essential to defense systems, energy infrastructure, advanced electronics, and modern manufacturing.

Today, over 90% of processing capacity for many of these materials is controlled overseas. This concentration represents not only an economic risk, but a strategic vulnerability.

At the same time, thousands of miles of American waterways remain contaminated by legacy mining operations—environmental liabilities that have long been considered unsolvable.

Mission Critical Materials exists at the intersection of these challenges: recovering rare earths, development of a US domestic supply chain, and providing clean water, all are critical to our way of life today and for generations to come.

FOCUS

A breakthrough in environmental restoration and critical mineral recovery

The concentration of heavy rare earths in most North American sources is extremely small. Mission Critical Materials has identified acid mine drainage sources that contain up to 50% of these strategically important materials. We are commercializing a breakthrough portfolio of technologies developed at West Virginia University to extract rare earth elements and critical minerals while cleaning up acid mine drainage from legacy mining sites.

In simple terms: We remove contaminants from water—and recover materials America urgently needs.

Acid Mine Drainage → Clarification → Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) → Mixed Rare Earth Oxides (MREO) → Clean Water

APPLICATION

Materials that power modern life–and protect it.

The materials recovered through our process are essential to the systems that define modern America—from defense readiness to consumer electronics and advanced manufacturing.
Fighter Aircraft & Defense Platforms
Submarines & Guidance Systems
Drones & Advanced Aerospace Applications
Medical Imaging Systems (MRI, X-Ray)
Consumer Electronics
Electric Vehicle & Battery Systems
These materials aren’t optional. They’re foundational to our way of life.

PARTNERSHIP

We’re building America’s critical materials future.
Mission Critical Materials was established to commercialize federally funded research developed at West Virginia University’s Water Research Institute, transforming years of laboratory and field innovation into a scalable domestic supply chain.

Our efforts align directly with U.S. Department of Energy and Department of Defense priorities—strengthening domestic supply chains while addressing long-standing environmental challenges.

This development effort has received more than $35 million in U.S. government support and has advanced from development through pilot- and commercial-scale deployment. Mission Critical Materials works with a limited number of partners across:

  • Federal agencies (DOD, DOE, EPA) and national laboratories
  • Advanced materials and magnetics companies
  • Metal separation and refining companies
